Heart rate variability methodology
What is heart rate variability (HRV)?

Heart rate variability is the difference in time between successive heart beats. These changes are due to the influence on the heart rate of various body systems - the circulatory system, elements of the autonomic and central nervous systems, etc. Mathematical analysis of heart rate variability allows you to determine the state of these systems. More details here.

How is stress measured?

Measurement of stress in the Engy Health service is carried out according to the methodology of heart rate variability in accordance with the International Standard for Measurement, Physiological Interpretation and Clinical Use of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Details in section “05.3. Stress level ” link.

How is energy measured?

Engy Health's Energy is equivalent to Total Power as part of the Heart Rate Variability Methodology in accordance with the International Standard for the Measurement, Physiological Interpretation and Clinical Use of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Details in section “05.1. Energy or Total Power” here.

How is health measured?

For a comprehensive analysis of health, we use the “Health Space” diagram, developed by the research team of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences within the framework of the heart rate variability methodology. See the section for details.

Are there any restrictions or contraindications?

The heart rate variability methodology has no contraindications, since the essence of the methodology boils down to non-invasive tracking of health by heart rate indicators. Limitations of HRV Analysis with Engy Health:
- The results of HRV analysis in Engy Health are recommendatory, should be used for preventive purposes and do not replace the recommendations of the treating specialists
- Engy Health recommendations are not intended for use by people with heart disease, pregnant women or children under 14
- Treatment with cardio-stimulating drugs affects the HRV indicators. In this case, independent interpretation of the data without the participation of physiologists is not recommended.
- Engy Beat - ultra sensitive heart rate monitor. Measurements are taken within 5 minutes: this is the minimum time for tracking heart rate waves.

Strict observance of the measurement rules is necessary to obtain a reliable result.

Where can I learn more about heart rate variability?

As a popular scientific, publicly available source with an introduction to the topic of heart rate variability, we recommend the scientific monograph “Methods and devices for space cardiology on board the International Space Station” (buy by link). For an extended list of literature on the use of HRV analysis in various spheres of life, see section “06. How to use Engy Health ” here. You can also track the results of current HRV research in international medical journals.

Measurement rules
How to correctly measure HRV?

- Take measurements daily in the morning, 5-10 minutes after waking up, but before taking a shower, any physical activity and breakfast

- Keep your eyes open so you don't accidentally fall asleep
- Try not to cough, sneeze or swallow saliva while measuring

How many times a day should HRV be taken?

We recommend taking measurements at least once a day in the morning to identify the state of your body at rest: this will allow you to understand the level of your resources and make adjustments to the daily routine based on your health status. The second, evening measurement will show to what extent stress factors have exhausted your resources.

I see the “Interference” indicator on the metering screen. What to do?

If, during the measurement, the interference lasts no more than 3-5 seconds and no more than 1-2 times per minute, there is nothing to worry about. If you see frequent disturbances lasting more than 5 seconds, you should redo the measurement in accordance with the measurement rules

Interpretation of measurements and indicators
What metrics does Engy Health measure?

With the help of mathematical analysis of heart rate variability in accordance with the International Standard for Measurement, Physiological Interpretation and Clinical Use of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and/or methodological developments of IBMP RAS, Engy Health makes it possible to monitor the following indicators:

- Health space (Baevsky diagram)
- Indicator of activity of regulatory systems (PARS)
- Stress
- Pulse
- Energy (Total Power)
- HF-wave range (parasympathetic system voltage)
- Range of LF-waves (tension of the sympathetic system)
- Range of VLF-waves (voltage of the humoral system)
- Balance LF/HF (Vegetative Balance)
- SDNN
- RMSSD
- CV

Where can I find the measurement results?

The measurement results are available in the "Indicators in dynamics" section on the main page of the Engy Health application

What is “Health Space”?

The "Health Space" (or "Baevsky Diagram") diagram shows your body's readiness to adapt to stress and stress on a scale from full norm (green) to failure of adaptation (red). Your state in space is determined by the ratio of physiological reserves and stress (that is, the intensity of their costs). Through adaptability, the chart reflects overall health. The “Health Space” diagram is a methodological development of the IBMP RAS.

What is PARS?

PARS - "Indicator of the Activity of Regulatory Systems" - an integral indicator that reflects the degree of stress in the body. The PARS indicator is a methodological development of the IBMP RAS.

What is Stress Index?

The Stress Index shows the level of physiological stress and mobilization of the body, its readiness to solve emerging life tasks. Stress is measured according to the International Standard for the Measurement, Physiological Interpretation and Clinical Use of Heart Rate Variability (HRV).

How is heart rate measured?

Pulse is the average heart rate in 1 minute, measured as the length of R-R intervals. Engy Health allows you to track your heart rate history and see your rate variation

What is Total Power?

"Energy" shows what energy potential you have at the time of measurement, with what efficiency you can react to stress in changing situations. Energy corresponds to Total Power and is measured in accordance with the International Standard for Measurement, Physiological Interpretation and Clinical Use of Heart Rate Variability (HRV).

What does the Energy Composition diagram mean?

The Energy Composition diagram reflects the level of resources available to you for adaptation to stress and shows how they are composed, to what extent the various components of the autonomic and central nervous systems form this resource, as, for example, the combat capability of a military unit is formed from the number soldiers, available ammunition and effective command.

What is HF?

The HF index reflects the degree of tension in the parasympathetic system, which is responsible for relaxation and recovery. This indicator demonstrates the extent to which you are restored, correlates with the tone of the vagus nerve and is one of the most important for determining the vitality of the body. It is determined by analyzing the frequencies of HF waves in the pulsogram.

What is LF?

The LF index reflects the degree of tension of the sympathetic system, which is responsible for the mobilization and response of the body to stress.

What is VLF?

The VLF indicator reflects the degree of integration of regulation processes, the involvement of the humoral and central nervous systems in the management of basic processes in the body. It is determined by analyzing the frequencies of the VLF waves in the pulsogram. Correlates with the level of psychological stress

What does LF / HF Balance mean?

The LF/HF value reflects your vegetative balance, or Flow / Recovery ratio. It makes it easy to determine when your body stops coping with stress.

What is SDNN?

The SDNN indicator reflects the degree of physiological recovery, correlates with the general heart rate variability. SDNN reflects the state of the parasympathetic system, which is responsible for recovery from stress.

What is RMSSD?

The RMSSD indicator reflects the degree of physiological recovery. RMSSD reflects the state of the parasympathetic system, which is responsible for recovery from stress. This indicator is especially popular among athletes for adjusting the load during the training process.

What does CV mean?

CV - the degree of dispersion of the RMSSD (Recovery) indicator for the last 7 days. The CV shows how stable your recovery is. Read more here.
